Sharon Malloy

Malloy, Sharon Lynn, of Flushing, age 70, passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday, May 19, 2013. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2013 at Flushing United Methodist Church. Rev. Jeff Jaggers will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Hills Cemetery. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Given Sharon’s devotion to the development of Flint youth, memorial contributions may be made to Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Greater Flint, 410 E. Sharon was born in Belleville, Illinois, on November 13, 1942, the daughter of Martin and Imogene (Grunenfelder) Wick. She went to Southwestern High School, Flint Michigan, and earned her Bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University in 1964. She was a teacher for 40 years in eight Flint Public Schools, including Southwestern High School, Zimmerman Junior High, Longfellow Middle School, Northern High School, and Schools of Choice. Sharon taught English composition, literature, physical education, and cheerleading, influencing thousands of Flint youth over her career. She was a skilled bridge player and organized a bridge club at Sorrento’s in Flushing. Sharon was known for her annual holiday euchre party with friends and family. She enjoyed reading, playing cribbage, and winning at Scrabble. Most importantly, she was a loving and caring mother to her three children, Scott, Matthew and Carly, and nurtured their development into young adults and successful professionals.

Sharon is survived and lovingly remembered by children, Scott and wife Donna Gray of Columbiaville, MI; Matthew and wife Debra Gray of Knoxville, TN; Carly and husband Jeff Cummings of Starkville, MS; grandchildren, Bryan Gray of Belton, TX; Ethan Gray of Knoxville, TN, Ashley Zeitz of Gaylord, MI; mother, Imogene Strahle of Flint, MI; sisters, Patricia and husband Dennis Riker of Wimberley, TX, Gail and husband David Catron of Haslett, MI; brother, David and wife Marjorie Strahle of Linden, MI; brother-in-law, John Wentworth of Fenton, MI; step-sister, Joyce Anderson of Centennial, CO; nine nieces and nephews; and dozens of close friends and colleagues.

Sharon was preceded in death by her father, Martin Wick; stepfather, Arthur Strahle; and sister, Nancy Wentworth.
