Newton, Robert O. of North East, PA, age 95, passed away Thursday, February 21, 2013 in PA. Funeral services will be held at Bowers Funeral Home in North East, PA. Committal services will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 1, 2013 at Flushing Cemetery, Flushing, Michigan.
Robert was born on October 8, 1917 in North East, PA, the son of Olpha and Velma (King) Newton. He was employed in Postal Management for 27 years with the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1976. He served as a Sgt. with the U.S. Army during WWII as a Tank Commander under General S. Patton, in the 5th Armored Division (Ghost Division) in Europe. He received five Battlestars for service in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Central Europe and the Alsace Rhineland. Bob was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in North East. He was a life member of the American Legion Post #105 in North East, where he had served as a director on the Home Association. Bob was a member of the 5th Armored Division Association, Disabled American Veterans, National Association of Retired Federal Employees in Michigan and the American Association of Retired Persons.
He is survived by his daughter, Susan J. Newton of Portland, OR; sister, Eleanor Miller of North East, PA and several nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Newton in 1986 and sister, Lucille Hitt.
