Catherine Joan Mercer, 65, of Newaygo, Mich., died Feb. 23, 2012, at home, surrounded by loved ones after a battle with cancer. Catherine loved her Michigan Wolverines, retail therapy and her grandchildren’s french fries and Halloween candy. But most of all, she loved her friends and family. She expressed that love in many ways. Among them: teaching grandchildren how to sew and make cookies, completing income-tax forms for dear ones, and beating her daughter and granddaughters at card games. In her final days, she found the strength to travel to New York to celebrate the first birthday of her youngest granddaughter.
Born in Flint, Mich., on Aug. 13, 1946, to Thomas and Madonna Cussans, Catherine graduated from St. Mary’s School in Mt. Morris and the University of Michigan-Flint. She worked as a medical technologist for 32 years at McLaren Regional Medical Center, before retiring in 2001. That year, she moved to Newaygo to be closer to her family.
Catherine was preceded in death by her parents, brother Thomas K. Cussans, and stepdaughter Sharon Mercer. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Terence Mercer; son Bret (Michelle) Mercer; daughter Erin (Todd) Fettig; brothers Kevin (Mary) Cussans and Patrick Cussans; grandchildren Alison and Cadence Mercer-Curtis, Carter and Tatum Fettig, and Sophie and Mackenzie Mercer.
The family will receive friends and relatives Monday, March 5, from 1-4 p.m. at Rossell Funeral Home, 307 East Main St., Flushing. A memorial service will follow at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Make-a-Wish Foundation of Michigan.
