Charles A. Thompson, M.D. of Flushing, Michigan, age 84, died Saturday, January 21, 2012. Beloved husband of Lois for 59 years. Loving father of Kris Thompson (Michael Rooney) of Beverly Hills; Mark (Mary) Thompson of Scotch Plains NJ, Sue (Mark) Weiss of Flint, Carol (Ted) Jastal of Findlay OH, David (Ruth) Thompson of Fort Gratiot, Linda (Tom) Oelke of Bloomfield Township and Amy (Pete) Peterson of Tawas City. Born in Detroit Michigan on November 20, 1927 to the late Howard and Ruth Thompson, he grew up in Ferndale. After graduating from Lincoln High School, he enlisted in the United States Army and while in the ASCP program, he attended the University of Illinois. He served with the 3176 Signal Service Battalion overseas and returned home May of 1947. After being discharged from the Army in 1947, he attended Albion College where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. On Sept 6, 1952, he and Lois Ann Sockman, also from Ferndale, married.
Dr. Thompson attended the University of Michigan Medical School and then completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Hurley Medical Center. A distinguished physician who practiced in Flint for 48 years, he was a member of the American College of Physicians, the Michigan State Medical Society House of Delegates and a past president of the Genesee County Medical Society.
Dr. Thompson was a member of the medical staff at Hurley Medical Center and was chief of staff from 1971 to 1994. He was a former long-standing and very active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Flint where he sang in the choir, chaired numerous committees, and developed life-long friendships. He was presently a member of Flushing United Methodist Church.
Dr. Thompson was preceded in death by his brothers, Howard and Jack Thompson. In addition to his wife, his children and their spouses, he is survived by his dear grandchildren, Patrick and Ryan (Elizabeth) Rooney and Heather (Gary) Hopkins; Michael (Rachel), Christopher and Laura Thompson; David, Miriam, Jonathan and Hannah Weiss; Michelle (Adam) Weingartner, Megan and Katherine Jastal; David, Matthew and Jack Thompson; Natalie, Elizabeth and Tom Oelke; Charles, Daniel and Neil Peterson; 3 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Marilyn Thompson, niece Ruth Morgano, treasured friends and relatives. Respected for his integrity, compassion and devotion to family, profession, and friends; his family loved him and will cherish his memory.
Visitation will be held on Monday, January 23 from 4 pm to 8 pm at Rossell Funeral Home in Flushing. Funeral services are on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 with visitation from 10 am until the time of service at 11 am at Flushing United Methodist Church with Reverend Jeff Jaggers officiating.
