Robert E. Mark, age 62, of Houghton, MI died Monday, May 23, 2011 as a result of a catastrophic stroke. A Funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at St. Robert Catholic Church, 310 N. Cherry St., Flushing. Fr. Roy Horning will officiate. Burial will follow at Bendle Cemetery. Visitation will be 1-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and 5-8 p.m. Monday at Rossell Funeral Home and 10 a.m. until time of the Mass Tuesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the Bob Mark Memorial Elevator Pitch Competition at Michigan Technological University (Make checks payable to MI Tech Fund / Bob Mark Memorial).
Bob was born in Cass City, MI, the first child of Archie and Geraldine (Kehoe) Mark. He was educated in the Flushing, MI community schools and later received a BA from Michigan Technological University and his MBA degree from The University of Utah. He married Nancy Mae Peck (daughter of Raymond and Ella Peck) at St. Robert Catholic Church in Flushing on September 5, 1970. They have three children.
He served in the U.S. Army from December 1971 to November 1976 where he was stationed in Germany and had achieved the rank of Captain. Bob went on to have a varied career in business, academia and public service, including: the Mass Mutual Life Insurance Company, Pentabs - a software company he owned in California, and Rowe Professional Services Company where he held the position of Principal, Partner and CFO before retiring in 2005. Most recently, he served as a professor at his alma mater, Michigan Technological University, with their School of Business and Economics until the time of his death.
Bob was also very involved in his community serving for several years on the Flushing Community Schools and the Genesee County Intermediate School District Boards of Education; an active member of the Flushing Lions Club; and coaching hockey at Flushing High School. He also had numerous other interests including, but never limited to: professional magician & hypnotist, acting in community theater productions, photography, public speaking, bicycling, and golf.
Bob will be dearly missed by his family, friends, colleagues and students. He had an immeasurable impact on innumerable lives and will be fondly remembered as a loving and devoted husband and father, a loyal brother and brother-in-law, an untiring enthusiast, an ardent developer of new schemes and adventures, a revered teacher, and for his keen sense of humor and love of mischief.
He is survived by: his loving wife of 41 years, Nancy; daughter, Jacqualine Mark of Flushing; son, Phillip and his wife Elizabeth and granddaughter, Nessa of Stratford, VA; son, Larry and his wife Alison of Jacksonville, FL; their ‘other son’, John Morken and his wife Kine and granddaughter, Ella and grandson, Linus of Lillestroem, Norway; brothers, Tom (Anne) Mark and Rick (Connie) Mark of Flushing, Tim (Pam Kennedy) Mark of Bay City; sister, Cheryl (Seniour Douglas) Edwards of Chandler, AZ; sister-in-law, Sharon (Jim) Malone of Amherst, NY; brother-in-law, Raymond (Kathy) Peck of Beaverton; brother-in-law, Robert (Cindy) Peck of Saginaw; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his parents-in-law and sister-in-law, Chris (Rick) Mark.
